When a brain artery is blocked by a blood clot (Ischemic Stroke) or ruptures (Hemorrhagic Stroke), brain cells are deprived of oxygen and begin to die within minutes. Rapid medical action saves lives and limits long-term disability.
Remember the F.A.S.T. Rule
- F — Face Drooping: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop or feel numb?
- A — Arm Weakness: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
- S — Speech Difficulty: Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Is their speech slurred or strange?
- T — Time to Call Hospital: If you observe any of these symptoms, call emergency services immediately.
The Golden Window (Within 4.5 Hours)
For ischemic stroke, intravenous clot-busting medication (thrombolysis) or mechanical thrombectomy must be administered within early hours to restore blood flow and rescue at-risk brain tissue.
